Five years after becoming Malaysia's first fully approved digital asset exchange, Luno Malaysia has published milestone numbers that double as a census of the country's regulated crypto market:

  • 1 million+ customers
  • 72 million+ transactions processed
  • RM87 billion+ cumulative transacted volume — up 32% year-on-year
  • RM4.28 billion in assets under custody, more than doubling year-on-year

APAC general manager Aaron Tang says Luno continues to hold over 90% of Malaysia's regulated DAX market.

Who is actually investing

The demographic details are the interesting part. Country manager Scarlett Chai notes the average investor age is 34.8, the median deposit is RM100, and female customer growth (17%) is outpacing male (14%). This is not a whale market — it's a mass-market savings behaviour forming inside the regulated perimeter.

Luno also continues to push its Shariah-compliant Ethereum staking — claimed as a world first for a regulated exchange and exclusive to Malaysia — with staking assets split across ETH (55%), SOL (25%) and ADA (20%).

Context

Bitcoin opened 2024 at RM198,911 and touched an all-time high of RM438,466 during the year, and SC data puts cumulative DAX trading at RM42.4 billion by mid-2024 (from RM1.4 billion in 2020). The market Luno leads is growing fast — and its dominance is exactly why the arrival of challengers like Hata matters.
